AEMPOWER® Technology

The anion exchange membrane (AEM) is one of three water electrolysis technologies available on the green hydrogen production market. Despite its lower level of maturity, AEM offers significantly higher energy efficiency than alkaline electrolysers, with lower costs compared to proton exchange membranes (PEM), as it does not require expensive platinum group materials. AEM market penetration remains low, and the few commercially available products are aimed at small-scale distributed production facilities.

AEMPower aims to create the world’s first high-power water electrolyzer of its kind, targeting facilities exceeding 100 MW with minimal environmental impact and reduced costs. The technology’s fundamentals, currently under development, are based on a single repeatable unit (SRU) or 100 kW module featuring TR’s proprietary stack configuration and design, low-CRM catalysts, and a scalable balance of plant to accommodate a wide range of hydrogen production levels.

Currently, a 1 kW stack has been validated, and a 25 kW stack is being produced for late 2025. The first demonstrator of the 100 kW SRU module is planned for 2027.

Main advantages of AEMpower®

  • High power in a small space: the innovative compact 100 kW SRU will enable large-scale hydrogen production in small physical spaces.
  • Lower costs: The absence of PGMs, reduced CRM, and compact design will lower capital costs.
  • Modular and scalable: the standardized module and adaptable Balance of Plant will enable a wide range of production scales and applications.
  • Eco-friendly design: Our patented design will allow for the repair of fuel cells to extend the modules’ service life.

Overall, hydrogen production using AEM offers a promising path toward a sustainable and economically viable hydrogen economy. Its advantages in terms of cost, sustainability, and scalability make it a key technology for the future of clean energy.

Applications

AEMPOWER will produce pressurized green hydrogen for a wide range of applications:

  • Renewable energy storage.
  • Raw material for petrochemical processes.
  • Reducing agent in steel manufacturing.
