{"id":16459,"date":"2026-03-06T11:18:00","date_gmt":"2026-03-06T11:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ddtp.tecnicasreunidas.es\/tecnicas-reunidas-promotes-the-circular-economy-in-the-photovoltaic-sector-through-the-resil2volt-project\/"},"modified":"2026-06-04T09:58:37","modified_gmt":"2026-06-04T09:58:37","slug":"tecnicas-reunidas-promotes-the-circular-economy-in-the-photovoltaic-sector-through-the-resil2volt-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ddtp.tecnicasreunidas.es\/en\/tecnicas-reunidas-promotes-the-circular-economy-in-the-photovoltaic-sector-through-the-resil2volt-project\/","title":{"rendered":"T\u00e9cnicas Reunidas promotes the circular economy in the photovoltaic sector through the ReSil2Volt project"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"16459\" class=\"elementor elementor-16459 elementor-15337\" data-elementor-post-type=\"post\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a88b9ed e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"a88b9ed\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5955076d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5955076d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"s10\">\n<div class=\"s10\"><strong><span class=\"s9\">\u2022 <\/span><span class=\"s4\">The project addresses a key technological challenge for the energy transition: recovering and processing strategic materials from end-of-life solar panels to reintroduce them into the manufacturing of new photovoltaic cells.<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"s10\"><strong><span class=\"s9\">\u2022 <\/span><span class=\"s4\">T\u00e9cnicas Reunidas leads ReSil2Volt as part of the RENOCICLA Program, funded by the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDEA) and the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO).<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p class=\"s7\">The project focuses specifically on the <span class=\"s4\">recovery of silicon dust<\/span> (\u201cgrey mass\u201d), a complex fraction generated after the primary treatment of solar panels that contains critical materials such as <strong><span class=\"s4\">silicon, silver, aluminum, tin, copper<\/span>, and<span class=\"s4\"> lead<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\">Its recovery poses a significant technological challenge, as its composition is heterogeneous and currently constitutes one of the main bottlenecks to achieving a true circular economy in the photovoltaic sector.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\">ReSil2Volt proposes a comprehensive solution to recover these strategic materials and return them to the value chain <strong><span class=\"s4\">in the form of photovoltaic-grade silicon and silver<\/span><\/strong>, suitable for use in wafers and conductive pastes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\">The core of the project is the technology known as <strong><span class=\"s4\">ReSil2Volt<\/span><\/strong>, a <strong><span class=\"s4\">modular hydrometallurgical<\/span><\/strong> process <strong><span class=\"s4\">free of hazardous waste<\/span><\/strong>, designed to operate with high efficiency and adapt to variations in the composition of the raw material.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\">This technology enables the recovery of <strong><span class=\"s4\">metallurgical silicon (MGSi)<\/span><\/strong> and <strong><span class=\"s4\">silver chloride (AgCl)<\/span><\/strong> with recovery efficiencies exceeding 95%. In addition, the process also recovers other valuable byproducts, such as <strong><span class=\"s4\">AlCl\u2083<\/span><\/strong> (aluminum trichloride) and a metal cement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\">In order to reintroduce the recovered raw materials into the photovoltaic sector, the project will investigate advanced metallurgical purification routes\u2014such as<strong><span class=\"s4\"> slag<\/span><\/strong> <strong><span class=\"s4\">refining<\/span><\/strong>\u2014to convert the recovered metallurgical silicon into <strong><span class=\"s4\">solar-grade silicon (SoGSi)<\/span><\/strong>, removing critical impurities (B, P, Fe, Al, Ti) and achieving purities in the order of 6N (99.9999%).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\">In parallel, the AgCl obtained will undergo <strong><span class=\"s4\">controlled reduction<\/span><\/strong> processes to generate <strong><span class=\"s4\">4N-purity (99.99%) metallic silver<\/span><\/strong>, suitable for producing photovoltaic conductive paste.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\">T\u00e9cnicas Reunidas, the applicant for the ReSil2Volt project, leads the design, research, and validation of all key processes, from continuous hydrometallurgical treatment to metallurgical purification and the production of photovoltaic-grade materials. With its pilot infrastructure, expertise in hydrometallurgy, and track record in developing proprietary technologies such as ZINCEX\u00ae, RARETECH\u00ae, and PHOS4LIFE\u00ae, the company is thus consolidating its role as a leader in the circular economy as applied to critical raw materials.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\">The project, which will last 30 months and have a budget of \u20ac1,830,394, will be carried out entirely at the <strong><span class=\"s4\">T\u00e9cnicas Reunidas Technology Center<\/span><\/strong>, where the technology will be validated and fundamental knowledge generated for its future scaling and integration into industrial photovoltaic recycling ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"s7\">In short, the ReSil2Volt project will enable:<\/p>\n<div class=\"s10\"><span class=\"s9\">\u2022 <\/span>Reintroduce <strong><span class=\"s4\">recycled silicon and silver<\/span><\/strong> as high-quality secondary raw materials.<\/div>\n<div class=\"s10\"><span class=\"s9\">\u2022 <\/span><strong><span class=\"s4\">Reduce dependence<\/span><\/strong> on virgin raw materials and the environmental footprint associated with their extraction.<\/div>\n<div class=\"s10\"><span class=\"s9\">\u2022 <\/span><strong><span class=\"s4\">Develop a<\/span><\/strong> modular, scalable <strong><span class=\"s4\">solution<\/span><\/strong> free of hazardous waste.<\/div>\n<div class=\"s10\"><span class=\"s9\">\u2022 <\/span>Pave the way <strong><span class=\"s4\">toward a circular industrial model<\/span><\/strong> for the photovoltaic sector.<\/div>\n<p class=\"s7\">\u00a0The project is fully aligned with the objectives of <strong><span class=\"s4\">the Strategic Project for Economic Recovery and Transformation (PERTE) on the Circular Economy<\/span>, the<span class=\"s4\"> Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan<\/span>, and the requirements of <span class=\"s4\">the European Critical Raw Materials
