The CHAINERGY project (Sustainable value chains and advanced technologies for critical raw materials, energy generation and storage) is framed within Mission 5: Strategic sovereignty in mineral raw materials essential for industry and the energy transition, of the Missions Science and Innovation Programme 2025.

The initiative addresses the main challenges associated with the energy transition, European strategic autonomy, and the circular economy, through the development of new active materials, sustainable manufacturing processes, and advanced digital technologies for energy storage and generation.

CHAINERGY proposes clean, safe, and sustainable technological pathways that replace critical raw materials (Co, Ni, Bi, Li) with more abundant and secure alternatives (Mn, Si, P), while integrating AIbased predictive models and digitaltwin tools that accelerate process development, optimization, and industrial scaling.

Through this approach, the project fosters the creation of sustainable national value chains in the fields of critical raw materials, energy storage, and the circular economy, strengthening the technological and industrial independence of Spain and the European Union.

Descripción del proyecto:

The project aims to develop and investigate advanced, sustainable technological solutions for the production of active materials and energy storage and generation devices, reinforcing European technological and energy autonomy.

CHAINERGY addresses the entire value chain, from the synthesis and characterization of new active materials to their integration into energy systems, incorporating advanced manufacturing processes, circular reuse and recycling models, and AIbased predictive digital tools and digital twins.

CHAINERGY places particular emphasis on:

Reducing the use of critical raw materials (CRMs) through substitution with abundant and sustainable alternatives.
Valorization of industrial and urban waste streams as secondary sources of raw materials.
Lifecycle process optimization, accelerating the transition toward a circular, resilient, and autonomous energy model.
Within the project, Técnicas Reunidas, a leading engineering company in the energy sector, is responsible for the synthesis and characterization of active materials for batteries, as well as for the valorization of waste streams, such as wastewater treatment sludge, to recover phosphorus, directly supporting circular economy and industrial sustainability objectives.

The project enables the validation of new hydrometallurgical processes for phosphorus recovery in the form of H₃PO₄ and FePO₄, which will be used as precursors in the synthesis of cathodic materials (LFP).

CHAINERGY reinforces Técnicas Reunidas’ leadership in advanced waste valorization technologies by applying its knowhow in sustainable, high valueadded processes, and contributes to strengthening European technological and energy autonomy through the development of scalable and replicable processes.
